Annette Funicello's dancing partner was discovered on the streets of Fullerton California by Walt Disney when she was just thirteen years old. Funicello's Mickey Mouse Club teammates were furious when Funicello became part of the cast in season 1 of the show and without being required to audition. Disney did the right thing in making the decision as Funicello was quickly the main character of The Mickey Mouse Club. Also, she had her own adventure story entitled Adventures in Dairyland. Funicello's potential to become a teenage star was quickly realized. Disney hired Tutti Camerata, a well-established arranger, to help her launch her career as a recording artist. Annette, however, wasn't too enthusiastic about Funicello singing. Funicello was a fan of recordings and collaborated together with Camerata who was one the only forty-something arranging professionals of this time who was aware of the foundations of early music. Annette Sings Anka - her third album, was the first album to utilize the songs of a rock musician as a repertoire. Funicello was co-starring with Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. It was the very first in a sequence of movies about beach parties which became immensely famous. The scripts for each of these movies were thoroughly reviewed and endorsed by Walt Disney so as to ensure the image of Annette was protected.
